From Barbara and Liz Birch in England I received the following contribution in the debate about the so called Hebrew Roots movement. I find their analysis well balanced and would want to see more balance in the debate that right now is raking havoc on several blogs.
I present the contribution as written. Comments are welcome in either English or Swedish as Barbara and Liz read the blog frequently using Google Translate.
One of the links I sent was Israel-insider.
A balanced analysis
Yes we have looked at the links, thanks, we are indeed interested.
The israelinsider link – we thought it was a good description of how things are and how people can take a basic truth and then run the wrong way with it!
A few years ago we looked at the Israel/Judah/Ephraim story ourselves – and we shared it with the Enarsons.
Lennart Jareteg’s post we also thought was good – a lot of wisdom and truth there, obviously we agree with his facts.
Eddie Chumney is another story! He is a ‘two-house’ person, and we are unable to agree with his teaching or his ‘facts’.
Yes there is a basic truth about the restoration of Ephraim, but this restoration should go naturally with the normal Christian walk of ongoing revelation, confession, repentance and trust.
We understand things this way
Israel became divided into Judah and Ephraim, Judah retained their identity and were exiled. Ephraim lost their identity and were exiled. Jesus came to bring restoration for the divided house of Israel, and to save the Gentiles.
Isaiah 49:6 says
it is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.
Jesus came with the offer of salvation for the whole world and the Bible describes in detail how it happens for Judah, for Ephraim and for the Gentiles. God knows our personal history and personal identity and calls us all to salvation through Jesus.
Incidentally, we’d add here that logically and scientifically DNA cannot be lost. It is human thinking to imagine Ephramite DNA is watered down until it actually becomes Gentile – that’s not physically possible! So there can be Jews (Judah) saved, there can be Gentiles saved, and there can be Ephraim saved. Each group comes from a different place, but all head for the same destination – God’s family. And it will be a heart transformation for everyone!
We wrote to Lars about all this. We found it helpful to see that words with a ‘re-‘ prefix apply to exiled people who were once Israel – children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
This means that the words restore, renew, revive – these words mean something is being done again. So Israel re-turn and are re-grafted. Whereas Gentiles turn and are grafted.
As with a lot of things understanding the meanings of words and being precise with language is important – because Scripture is so precisely accurate.
We’ve noticed many enthusiastic Messianics are careless with Scripture – eg. the words Jew and Israel are often used inaccurately.
Therefore there is a lot of mis-information in the world!
The point is that yes there are elements of truth in the Hebrew roots movement teaching. But human thoughts and human works rather than God’s grace often prevail.
Man’s thoughts and man’s ways often dominate the scene – so that biblically we could say that Babylon is ruling.
Our experience is that God is always anxious to rescue people from human/fleshly mixed Christianity – again, we’d say this should be the normal Christian walk which continues by God’s grace.
We’ll end there!
All the best, Barbara and Liz
